Moving
ADM to New Computer - Situation 4
Back
to "Move ADM Files"
Situation
4:
- I
have a new computer, and
-
I
want to transfer the entered data from the old computer
to the new one, and
-
ADM has
been installed on the new computer, and
-
ADM is
not working correctly on the old computer,
and
NOTE:
Your ADM that is already installed on the new computer
will be referred to as the permanent installation for
the purposes of this document. A temporary installation
of ADM may be required to import your old forms.
- If
the permanent installation of ADM is on a server or
a computer with a shared folder:
a. Where the ADM folder is located, grant each
user Create, Read, Write, Modify, and Execute privileges
(these privileges are known by different names depending
on the operating system of the computer where ADM is located).
For Windows Server 2003, you may also be required to set
Share permissions.
b. For each user who will be accessing ADM, create
a drive mapping to the folder where you copied the ADM
structure. For example, if you copied the ADM structure
to \\server\share\ADM, you can choose to map drive J:
to \\server\share. The ADM folder will then be located
using J:\ADM.
c. Go to Step 3.
- If
the permanent installation of ADM is on a single PC:
a. If the computer is running Windows XP and multiple
users will be accessing ADM, complete the steps below.
i. Open Control Panel > Folder Options and choose
the View tab > Advanced Settings. Remove the check
mark from "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".
Click OK.
ii. In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right click
on the ADM folder. Select Properties. Choose the Security
tab and select the user name or group of the ADM users.
Click Allow Full Control. Repeat this step for each user
or group. Click OK.
iii. Repeat Step 2.a.i, but now check the
box for "Use simple file sharing". Click OK.
b. Go to Step 3.
- If
possible, run ADM on the old computer. Note: if you
cannot run ADM on the old computer, go to Step 5 below.
a. Create a data transfer file and save it to a
location the new computer can access.
i. Choose the menu Tools > ADM Data Transfer
> Create Transfer Files (or Export to .Zip Files,
depending on your version).
ii. Select a transfer folder that the new computer
can access (e.g., a shared drive, a folder on a floppy
disk, a thumb drive, a CD).
iii. Choose a file name that is no longer than
8 characters or numbers and contains no spaces or special
characters. Click the Next button.
iv. On the selection criteria screen, click the
Next button.
v. Click the Transfer button to create the
transfer file.
vi. Go to Step 4.
- Import
the contents of the data transfer file into your new permanent
ADM:
a. Review the ADM User Guide chapter about Data
Transfer.
b. Start your permanent ADM.
c. Copy the file created in Step 3 or Step 5 into
the \ADM\Export folder.
d. From the Tools menu, select ADM Data
Transfer > Import Transfer Files.
i. Select the file you copied in Step c above.
ii. Click the Next button through all presented
screens. Read the Help available on each screen if you
need instructions.
iii. Complete the import of your previous data.
iv. After import has completed, go to the Catalog,
select a person and view forms to check that data did
import.
e. Go to Step 6.
- If
you cannot run ADM on the old computer, you can try
restoring a backup of the ADM\Database folder from the
old computer to a temporary location on another
computer. NOTE: IF YOU DON'T HAVE A BACKUP YOU CANNOT
TRANSFER OLD DATA TO YOUR NEW COMPUTER.
a. Create an ADM folder in a temporary location
of your choice on a stand-alone PC or a shared computer.
Then create a \Database folder under the \ADM folder.
Copy the contents of the restored \Database folder
into this location. Do NOT copy the contents of the
ADM\Database folder directly from your old computer that
is not working properly! Do NOT copy the restored ADM\Database
folder into your permanent new ADM installation!
b. Select (highlight) all the files in the temporary
\Database folder, right click the mouse, and choose properties.
Be sure that Read Only is not checked.
c. Install ADM to the temporary location
you selected in Step a above. This is the temporary
installation. When prompted for serial numbers, use
all the serial numbers for your old versions of
ADM (these may be on separate CDs).
d. Run the temporary installation of ADM and create a
data transfer file.
i. Choose the menu Tools > ADM Data Transfer
> Create Transfer Files (or Export to .Zip Files,
depending on your version).
ii. Select a transfer folder from which you can
copy the new file to your permanent ADM installation.
(e.g., a shared drive, a folder on a floppy disk, a thumb
drive, a CD).
iii. Choose a file name that is no longer than
8 characters or numbers and contains no spaces or special
characters. Click the Next button.
iv. On the Selection Criteria screen, click the
Next button.
v. Click the Transfer button to create the
transfer file.
vi. Verify that your transfer file is in a location
that can be accessed by the permanent ADM.
vii. Uninstall the temporary ADM.
viii. Go to back to Step 4.
- To
maintain licensing compliance, uninstall ADM from the
old computer.
