Moving
ADM to New Computer - Situation 2
Back
to "Move ADM Files"
Situation
2:
- If
the new computer is a server or a computer with a shared
folder, create a folder called ADM in the location
where you want to install it.
a. Where the ADM folder is located, grant each
user Create, Read, Write, Modify, and Execute privileges
(these privileges are known by different names depending
on the operating system of the computer where ADM is located).
For Windows Server 2003, you may also be required to set
Share permissions.
b. For each user who will be accessing ADM, create
a drive mapping to the folder where you copied the ADM
structure. For example, if you copied the ADM structure
to \\server\share\ADM, you can choose to map drive J:
to \\server\share. The ADM folder will then be located
using J:\ADM.
c. Go to Step 3.
- If
the ADM structure is to be installed on a single PC:
a. Create a folder called ADM on the new computer.
Do not create this folder inside another folder that has
a name of more than 8 characters in length or contains
a space. For example, create the folder C:\ADM, not the
folder C:\Program Files\ADM.
i. If the computer is running Windows XP and multiple
users will be accessing ADM, complete the steps below.
(1) Open Control Panel > Folder Options and
choose the View tab > Advanced Settings. Remove the
check mark from "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".
Click OK.
(2) In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right click
on the ADM folder. Select Properties. Choose the Security
tab and select the user name or group of the ADM users.
Click Allow Full Control. Repeat this step for each user
or group. Click OK.
(3) Repeat Step 2.a.i(1), but now check
the box for "Use simple file sharing". Click
OK.
b. Go to Step 3.
- If
possible, run ADM on the old computer. Note: if you
cannot run ADM on the old computer, go to Step 4 below.
a. Create a data transfer file and save it to a
location the new computer can access.
i. Choose the menu Tools > ADM Data Transfer
> Create Transfer Files (or Export to .Zip Files,
depending on your version).
ii. Select a transfer folder that the new computer
can access (e.g., a shared drive, a folder on a floppy
disk, a thumb drive, a CD).
iii. Choose a file name that is no longer than
8 characters or numbers and contains no spaces or special
characters. Click the Next button.
iv. On the selection criteria screen, click the
Next button.
v. Click the Transfer button to create the
transfer file.
vi. Go to Step 5.
- If
you cannot run ADM on the old computer, you can try
restoring a backup of the ADM\Database folder.
a. If you do not have a backup, data from the
old computer cannot be retrieved. Go to Step 5.
b. If you do have a backup from the old computer:
i. Create a \Database folder under the \ADM folder
you created in Step 1 or 2.
ii. Copy the contents of the restored \Database
folder into this location. Do NOT copy the contents
of the ADM\Database folder directly from your old computer
that is not working properly!
iii. Select (highlight) all the files in the \Database
folder, right click the mouse, and choose properties.
Be sure that Read Only is not checked.
iv. Go to Step 5.
- Install
ADM on the new computer.
a. When prompted for the installation location,
select the ADM folder you created in Step 1 or 2 above.
b. When prompted for serial numbers, use all
the serial numbers for all versions of ADM that you have
(these may be on separate CDs). Include the serial numbers
for your old ADM and any upgrade, new module, or multi-user
license you have.
c. If the new computer is a server or a computer
with a shared folder, using the drive mapping you
created in Step 1.b, run ADM\Workstation Install\Setup.exe
at each workstation accessing ADM. The Workstation
setup (not ADM) requires local administrative rights to
run.
- Start
ADM on the new computer.
a. Test ADM on the new computer by entering and
scoring a rating form. If you are not able to enter
and score a rating form:
i. Uninstall ADM
ii. Delete the ADM\Database folder
iii. Reinstall ADM on the new computer. Any forms
on the old computer cannot be recovered.
iv. Repeat this test (Step 6).
v. Go to Step 7.
- If
you created a Data Transfer file in Step 3, import the
contents of the file into your new ADM:
a. Review the ADM User Guide chapter about Data
Transfer.
b. Start ADM.
c. Copy the file created in Step 3 into the \ADM\Export
folder (see Step 5 for the ADM installation location).
d. From the Tools menu, select ADM Data
Transfer > Import Transfer Files.
i. Browse to the ADM\Export folder and select the
file created in Step c above.
e. Click the Next button through all presented
screens. Read the Help available on each screen if you
need instructions.
f. Complete the import of your previous data.
g. Go to the Catalog, select a person and view
forms to check that data did import.
h. If you are not able to edit or score old forms:
i. Uninstall ADM
ii. Delete the ADM\Database folder
iii. Reinstall ADM on the new computer. Any forms
on the old computer cannot be recovered.
i. Go to Step 8.
- To
maintain licensing compliance, uninstall ADM from the
old computer.
